Ideal for building and expanding your personal client base!
You need to work independently and be registered as such, either as a sole proprietorship or as a limited liability company (GmbH / AG). Ideally, you have several years of experience and can work fully independently. You want to be part of a thriving community of hairdressers and either bring your own client base or build it up step by step.
A sole proprietorship is the most popular legal form in Switzerland because it is easy to set up.
To obtain self-employed status, entrepreneurs can submit an application to the AHV/AVS office of the place where the activity is carried out.
For a sole proprietorship with a turnover of CHF 100,000 or more, registration in the Commercial Register is required.
Benefits of a sole proprietorship:
Simple, informal business activity
One person can be the owner, meaning no corporate law requirements need to be met
No minimum capital required
Pension fund withdrawal possible
No double taxation of income and assets
Disadvantages of a sole proprietorship:
Unlimited liability of the owner with their private assets
Partners cannot participate in the business
In some cantons, no child and education allowances are paid out
No unemployment benefits
If the sole proprietorship is entered in the Commercial Register, the family name must be visible.
A limited liability company (GmbH) is a company with its own legal personality, in which one or more people join together to form a business.
It is established through mandatory registration in the Commercial Register, whereby the shareholders — and therefore the owners of the share capital — are entered by name in the Commercial Register.
At least one shareholder and one managing director must be entered in the Commercial Register, although both roles can be held by the same person. One managing director with signing authority must be resident in Switzerland.
Benefits of a GmbH:
Liability is limited to the contributed share capital
Several shareholders are possible
Simple transfer of shares
Low minimum capital requirement: CHF 20,000
A creative company name is possible; the suffix “GmbH” is mandatory
Better insurance coverage than with a sole proprietorship, including unemployment insurance, accident insurance, and occupational pension coverage
Disadvantages of a GmbH:
No anonymity for shareholders
Compliance with corporate law requirements
Taxation at both GmbH and shareholder level, resulting in double taxation
Unlike with a sole proprietorship, you cannot make an early withdrawal of pension fund assets when founding a GmbH.
Opening your own salon is the dream of many hairdressers, but it comes with significant investment and risk.
To open your own salon, realistically, you would need to:
Set up a limited liability company (GmbH) to reduce your personal risk.
Have minimum capital of CHF 20,000.
Make sure you have the right insurance in place.
Have an accountant to support you with your bookkeeping.
Rent a location, often with minimum lease terms of 5 years and a deposit of 6 months.
Take over an existing salon or buy new furniture.
Have at least 5 to 10 clients per day, or 100 to 200 clients per month.
With Hairspace and our co-working / chair rental model, you can take your own independent path with limited risk.
How we support you on your journey:
You do not need a GmbH right away. A sole proprietorship is sufficient, with no minimum capital required.
No long-term lease agreements. Our minimum contract term is only 4 weeks. Our deposit is only 4 weeks or 1 month.
You can cancel at any time with 4 weeks’ notice.
Through our partnership with Zurich Insurance, we can advise you on the right insurance coverage.
If you need bookkeeping support, our accountant can help you.
You do not need to invest in furniture or buy an existing salon.
You can start with one day per week as a side business and build your own client base. Thanks to our prime locations, you can benefit from walk-in customers together with the other co-working members.
No non-compete clause. If you decide to start your own salon, you can take your clients with you.
We can support you in building your own brand on social media.
Simply said: we are here to help you succeed!
Yes, chair rental is legal, but only under certain conditions.
There are many questions around the term “chair rental” or "Stuhlmiete". The concept of chair rental itself is not illegal, but fake self-employment is illegal.
The topic of chair rental and fake self-employment is addressed in the appendix of the collective labour agreement. A copy of the collective labour agreement can be found on the Coiffuresuisse.ch website. The concept is explained on page 29.
The issue of “fake self-employment” mainly concerns chair rental in an existing salon, because the boundaries between the salon owner, their employees, and you as the chair renter are often very unclear.
At Hairspace, all precautions are deliberately taken to eliminate any doubt:
Hairspace is not a traditional salon and does not employ its own hairdressers.
Hairspace operates under a co-working model. Similar to renting a hotel room or an office, at Hairspace you rent a workstation.
All Hairspace members must be registered as self-employed.
All members are free to organise their own work, determine their own working hours, and use the products they prefer.
All members are visible as self-employed professionals on the Hairspace website and at the Hairspace location, and after ending their contract with Hairspace, they can move to their own salon together with their clients.
Hairspace is here to help every hairdresser succeed!
Based on our estimations, you can earn significantly more as an independent hairdresser.
Using averages, for a full-time workload, we estimate you can earn about 110.000 - 120.000 CHF per year. Deducting all costs, insurances, social security payments, etc., you can earn net about 80.000 CHF. This is significantly more than the average of 60.000 CHF gross, you earn as an employee.
We created a full calculation to provide full transparency and to allow you to make calculations based on your own experience. You can find our calculation here.
